Standardizing Driver Monitoring Systems — Enhancing Safety

Case Study

Monday, June 22

12:05 pm - 12:30 pm

Live in Berlin

Less Details

As autonomous and semi-autonomous vehicles become more prevalent, Driver Monitoring Systems (DMS) are crucial for ensuring road safety by detecting fatigue, distraction, and other impaired driving behaviors. With fatigue contributing to approximately 20% of crashes and distraction involved in over 70%, reliable DMS are essential. However, the rapid evolution of DMS technology has led to a fragmented ecosystem, hindering deployment and increasing costs. This presentation advocates for the standardization of DMS interfaces to promote safety and interoperability. The Association for Standardization of Automation and Measuring Systems (ASAM) proposes a new initiative to define an application interface, facilitating seamless integration across OEMs and suppliers. Aligning the industry around a common standard will accelerate innovation, reduce integration complexity, and ensure consistent safety performance across different DMS suppliers.

The audience will hear about how:

  • DMS are vital for detecting driver fatigue and distraction, major contributors to road accidents
  • The lack of standardization in DMS interfaces hampers deployment and increases costs
  • ASAM proposes a standardized application interface to enhance integration across OEMs and suppliers
  • Standardization will accelerate innovation and ensure consistent safety performance in DMS

ASAM e.V

https://www.asam.net/
ASAM e.V. is a non-profit organization that promotes standardization in automotive development. Together with its more than 400 member companies, ASAM develops standards that enable easy exchange of data and tools within and across tool chains. ASAM standards span a wide range of use cases in automotive Verification and Validation (V&V) and are in use worldwide. The ASAM OpenX® standards in particular aim to provide a complete set of standards for Simulation-based testing of automated driving functions. They cover a wide range of use cases for virtual development, including hybrid testing approaches that combine virtual and physical components. ASAM OpenX standards are gradually becoming the industry’s reference for their respective use cases and are supported by a majority of Simulation tool providers and manufacturers worldwide.
