The Visual Scanning — A Key Component of the Driver Visual Distraction Assessment Strategy

Case Study

Tuesday, June 23

09:25 am - 09:50 am

Live in Berlin

Less Details

The capability of the driver to use both focal and peripheral visions during driving allows him to scan visually the driving environment. The visual scanning path refers to the driver’s visual allocations in Areas of Interest (AOIs). In the context of the driver visual distraction assessment, the difficulty is the definition of a precise visual scanning related to taking information about the driving environment to avoid hazard and gazes directed towards the performance of secondary tasks. The study explored the Driver’s Visual Scanning to describe the driver’s visual scanning path and evaluate the possible impact on the reduction of False Alarms.

A total of 1.048.575 visual scanning data for over 80 subjects were used from a real road driving study without or with secondary tasks. The analysis of drivers’ yaw and pitch gazes in different AOIs showed that the visual scanning proportions are significantly different. These results of analysis provide important insights in the driver distraction assessment strategy.

  • Gaze angle ranges in yaw and pitch
  • Proportion of gaze allocations towards AOIs
  • Insights for visual spatial and Temporal strategy
  • Insight for the integration of visual scanning for the reduction of false alarms
