The interior and the corresponding user experience are becoming more and more important. Automated driving is the game changer for the next generation of vehicles. Now drive time becomes free time supported by an emotional and orchestrated overall experience for all senses and a new dimension of space in the interior. In addition, we need a comprehensive and highly networked range of digital functions for the interior of the future.
Mr. Heimberger and Mr. Rohlfs are presenting the process, starting from the derivation of customer needs and future trends to the design of an holistic customer experience, via a multimodal HMI concept for comprehensive digital functions, to the concept validation in VR.

Dipl.-Ing. Alexander Heimberger studied at KIT in Karlsruhe and began his career in 1998 with the International Junior Research Group at DaimlerChrysler. From 1999 to 2002, he worked for Mercedes-AMG as project manager for vehicle projects, followed by another five years as manager for vehicle projects. From 2008 to 2012, Alexander Heimberger headed major vehicle development projects at Mercedes-Benz Technology.
In 2013 he moved to Audi AG as Head of Exterior Development. Since 2017, Alexander Heimberger has been Head of Future Interior Development.
Dipl.-Ing. Richard Rohlfs studied at THI in Ingolstadt and began his career in 2010 in the numerical simulation at P+Z Engineering and took over the team leadership in the numerical simulation of the seat development.
In 2014 he moved to Audi AG as a development engineer for interior components. In 2019 Richard Rohlfs took over the project lead of Audi “First Class Travel” with the goal to create a cross-divisional holistic and innovative customer experience in the interior with the focus on highly automated driving.
From 2021 on Richard Rohlfs is working as the technical assistance for the interior user experience and systems, working on the Audi interior product strategy and the development and operationalization of innovative interior concepts in the early project phase.
